Combating racism in, and through, educational media

The UNESCO publication ‘Unmasking Racism: Guidelines for Educational Materials’

Racist ideologies and practices remain as concerning a global problem as ever, and educational media are by no means exempt. Such materials are far from neutral media for imparting knowledge. Textbooks studies focussing on a range of countries and regions have frequently demonstrated that textbooks contain racist stereotypes and promote or perpetuate prejudices.

Educational media producers face a number of challenges, not only when it comes to keeping racist content out of teaching materials but also to raising awareness of the full scope and impact of racism in a society and measures to combat it.

‘Unmasking Racism: Guidelines for Educational Materials’ has been created by UNESCO in partnership with the GEI and contains guidelines and recommendations on how to combat racism in educational media and how to foster a critical understanding of racism through educational media.

The guidelines summarise findings from international textbook studies that illustrate the forms in which racism manifests itself in educational media worldwide, and also provide detailed recommendations. The publication is primarily designed for curriculum developers and educational media producers but it also contains information valuable for education policy makers and teachers.

‘Unmasking Racism: Guidelines for Educational Materials’ is available from our website: https://www.gei.de/en/research/projects/unmasking-racism-guidelines-for-educational-materials
