This privacy policy provides a brief overview of what happens to your personal information when you visit our website. Personal information is any data through which you could be personally identified. Detailed information on the subject of data protection can be found in this document and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU-GDPR). Who is responsible for data processing on this website?

The party responsible for processing personal data in accordance with the GDPR and for other data protection issues related to this website is the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI), represented by its director, Professor Eckhardt Fuchs. How do we collect your data?

Some data is collected when you share it with us or relinquish it to us to be processed. This could, for example, be data that you send us by e-mail or when using the contact form. (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a & f)
Other data is collected automatically by our IT systems when you visit the website. This takes place automatically as soon as you access our website. The information collected is:

• browser type and browser version
• operating system used
• referrer URL
• host name of the accessing computer
• time of the server request
• amount of sent data in bytes
• IP address

These files are known as server log files and are stored for a maximum of 30 days, after which they are automatically deleted. The data is stored for security reasons; in order to clarify cases of misuse, for example. If data is required as evidence, it will not be deleted until the issue is resolved. This data will not be combined with data from other sources (Art. 6. Abs.1 lit f).

What do we use your data for?

Part of the data is collected to ensure the optimum provision of website services. We are also happy to contact you by e-mail, so long as you have given us permission to do so. Your data will not be passed to third parties.

Use of social media networks

The links to facebook and twitter integrated on our pages are pure links. Therefore, no data is passed on to facebook and twitter by visiting our pages. However, if you use the link to get to these social networks, your initial page, i.e. our address can be traced by facebook or twitter. If you are also logged into your facebook or twitter account at the same time, a linking of your name with the visit to our website by third parties is possible.

You have the following rights, in accordance with the GDPR. We would like to draw your attention particularly to your right to request that your data be corrected or deleted. You may also file a complaint with the responsible regulatory authorities, if deemed necessary.

Right of access (Article 15)

Right to Rectification (Article 16)

As a user, you have the right to request the rectification of inaccurate personal data pertaining to you.

Right to erasure (Article 17)

As a user, you have the right, according to the requirements laid out in article 17, to request that personal data pertaining to you is deleted. This applies if, for example, you withdraw or repudiate your consent, if data is processed unlawfully or if the data is no longer required for the purposes for which it was collected.

Right to restriction of processing (Article 18)

As a user, you have the right, so far as the requirements laid out in article 18 apply, to request restrictions on the processing of your personal data. This would apply, for example, if you wish to restrict further processing of such data, but do not wish to request the erasure of the data already collected.

Right to data portability (Article 20)

As a user you have the right to receive data concerning you and that you have made available, in a machine-readable format and to transmit this data without hindrance to another party, providing the conditions laid out in article 20 have been fulfilled.

Right to withdraw consent for the processing of personal data (Article 7, paragraph 3)

As a user, you have the right to withdraw at any time the consent given pursuant to article 6 for the processing of your personal data. Any data processed before consent was withdrawn is not affected.

Right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (Article 77)

As a user, you have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. If you believe the processing of your data infringes the data protection regulations, you may contact the data protection officer at the GEI (datenschutz@gei.de) or the relevant supervisory authority. The Institute's projects are supported by public funds. In order to be able to account to our funders for the use of the funds, we analyze the use of our website in anonymous form. We also evaluate this anonymised information for statistical purposes in order to provide demand-oriented information.

Matomo

For these purposes, we use the web analysis service "Matomo" (formerly "PIWIK") on our websites. Matomo is an Open Source software designed for optimising a website. It is running exclusively on the servers of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute in Braunschweig.

'Anonymous form' means Matomo stores in the database each new visitor IP address (ipv4 or ipv6 format) with the last components removed (2 Bytes). Your personal data will neither be analysed nor used for profiling or passed on to a third party. Given the anonymisation of IP addresses in this context, any user’s interest in having their personal data protected is duly taken account of.
The legal basis for the evaluation of information on the use of the website for the above-mentioned purposes is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (Legitimate interest) in conjunction with Article 6(1)(e) (Public interest) GDPR.

Für Videokonferenzen und Online-Meetings verwenden wir das Tool 'BigBlueButton'. Es handelt sich dabei um ein Open-Source-Webkonferenzsystem, das auf unseren eigenen Instituts-Servern gehostet wird. Das heißt, es werden keine Daten an Dritte weitergegeben.

Die Teilnahme an einer solchen Konferenz ist über gängige Webbrowser und nur über einen vom Institut zur Verfügung gestellten Link möglich. Ggf. ist für den Zugang ein Passwort vonnöten, das Ihnen von den Veranstaltenden zur Verfügung gestellt wird.

Welche Daten werden beim Einsatz von BigBlueButton verarbeitet?

Bei der Nutzung von 'BigBlueButton' werden verschiedene Datenarten verarbeitet. Welche Daten dies sind, hängt auch davon ab, welche Angaben Sie vor bzw. bei der Teilnahme an der jeweiligen Veranstaltung machen.

Neben den bereits weiter oben angesprochenen Daten der Log-Files (IP-Adresse, Betriebssystem etc.) ist es vor allem Ihr Name, den Sie beim Betreten des virtuellen Raums angeben müssen. Dieser ist für alle Teilnehmenden sichtbar. Nehmen Sie nur hörend an der Veranstaltung teil (Kopfhörer-Symbol), so werden keine weiteren Audio- und Video-Daten von Ihnen übermittelt. Bei einer aktiven Teilnahme (Mikrofon-Symbol) haben Sie die Möglichkeit, sich sowohl mit Ihrer Stimme als auch mit Ihrem Videobild zu beteiligen. Diese Daten können dann von allen Teilnehmenden gehört bzw. gesehen werden.

In beiden Fällen, also hörend oder aktiv, steht es Ihnen frei, sich am öffentlichen Chat, an Konversationen mit einzelnen Teilnehmer*innen, den geteilten Notizen oder Umfragen zu beteiligen. Diese Daten (mit Ausnahme des privaten Chats) können von allen eingesehen und teilweise heruntergeladen werden. Wird die Konferenz beendet, werden alle diese Daten automatisch gelöscht.

Aufzeichnungsfunktion von BigBlueButton

Im Moment zeichnet BigBlueButton aus technischen Gründen noch alle Videokonferenzen und Online-Meetings im Hintergrund auf. Außer dem Systemadministrator hat jedoch niemand Zugriff auf diese Daten. Diese Aufzeichnungen werden nicht weiterverwendet und nach 14 Tagen automatisch gelöscht.

Darüber hinaus kann von den Moderator*innen eine Konferenz oder ein Meeting ganz oder teilweise aufgezeichnet werden. Dies wird den Teilnehmenden über eine Mitteilung und einen roten Punkt im Präsentationsbildschirm angezeigt. Eine solche Aufzeichnung wird von den Moderator*innen bzw. den Organisator*innen der Veranstaltung vorher angekündigt. Die Aufnahme umfasst alle Audio- und Videobeiträge sowie die geteilten Notizen und den öffentlichen Chat. Nicht aufgezeichnet werden die Teilnehmerliste, private Chats und die Videobilder von Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern, die sich nicht aktiv, das heißt per Audiobeitrag an der Veranstaltung beteiligen.

Geschieht eine angekündigte Aufzeichnung ausschließlich zum Zweck der Instituts-internen Dokumentation und ohne Weitergabe an Dritte, so geschieht dies im berechtigten Interesse des Verantwortlichen (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. f DSGVO). Bei allen anderen Aufzeichnungen, insbesondere bei Aufnahmen, die an Dritte weitergegeben oder später veröffentlicht werden, wird von allen Teilnehmer*innen, die aufgezeichnet werden sollen, im Vorlauf der Veranstaltung eine Einwilligung (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a DSGVO) eingeholt.
