Creative, innovative, motivating: nominations for Textbook of the Year 2015

On 13 March 2015 the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, in conjunction with the Leipzig book fair, will announce the winners of the fourth annual ‘Textbook of the Year’ award. The nominees have already been confirmed. This year the judging panel will honour outstanding language, history and society, and STEM textbooks for lower secondary schools. The prize is under the patronage of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the German Länder.

In the mood for maths, Latin or history? The judging panel, comprising experts from academia, educational practice and publishing houses, was very impressed by this year’s selection. A total of nine books were shortlisted for the Textbook of the Year 2015. Successful candidates are those deemed to be outstanding contemporary textbooks that demonstrate bold and innovative content choice, didactic methodologies and design as well as those that are able to meet demanding educational standards and offer a skill-centered approach to learning.

‘The aims of the Textbook of the Year award are to raise awareness of the social significance of textbooks and to advance the continuous development and improvement of educational materials’ said Professor Simone Lässig, chair of the jury and director of the Georg Eckert Institute.

All nine nominees including, for the first time, a digital textbook, awaken curiosity, stimulate the pleasure of learning, encourage critical thought, illustrate correlations and open new perspectives. The selection criteria include consideration of  the educational concept, the relevance to the discipline, appropriateness for pupils, style of tasks, comprehensibility and design.
