It is impossible today to understand or influence politics without an understanding of the European Union. But what do German pupils learn about the European Union? This study innovatively combines two levels of empirical textbook research: On the first level the study examines the depiction of European integration in textbooks for general education schools; on the second level it analyses how textbooks are implemented in grammar schools and comprehensive schools in Lower Saxony and how they are viewed by teachers and pupils in those schools. The findings underline the importance of textbooks for politics lessons and indicate where existing problems lie as well as possibilities for improvement.
