How is religion portrayed in education and, specifically, in textbooks? Analyses of religion in history, religion and ethics textbooks from a range of countries produce a disparate picture of the construction of religious diversity. It is certainly clear that the same challenges are faced in all school subjects with regards to religious and ideological diversity. This series of essays demonstrates that educational media does not adequately feature shifts within religions and that the boundaries between religion and ‘non-religion’ remain underdetermined. It is also evident that the debate surrounding the appropriate educational approach to religion in democratic societies has gained new dynamism.
