Schriftenreihe – Concept and Costs

The GEI’s Schriftenreihe series is published in partnership with the respected academic publishing house V&R unipress and produces monographs and edited volumes in German or English, on topics related to educational media research. The series is one of very few publications internationally that focus explicitly on educational media research. It therefore fulfils an important role within this research field while documenting the work of the Institute within the international research community.

The series is supervised by an academic advisory board consisting of five professors, and the works it publishes are subject to an extensive evaluation procedure. To facilitate manuscript preparation, the editorial team will provide authors with a GEI Style Guide containing formal criteria and guidelines, based on the Chicago Manual of Style. Our editorial team assesses any manuscripts we receive and decides whether the texts are suitable to be sent, anonymised, to two external experts for double-blind peer review. The authors are subsequently invited to work with the in-house editorial team on the implementation of changes deemed necessary as a result of the review process; the aim is to produce a manuscript of near-publishable quality. To further ensure that high standards are maintained, the revised manuscript is read by our copyeditors, during which process any copyright issues will be clarified.

When published, the individual volumes are advertised on the Institute website, together with sleeve notes, lists of contents and metadata and can be accessed through the Institute's OPAC. As soon as they are printed, the publications will also be made available free of charge through V&R unipress and via the Institute’s repository, where the work will be released in pdf format under the current version of the CC license CC-BY and stored in the long-term archives. Each volume will be assigned an ISBN or URN and registered with the German National Library (DNB) as a citable work. In addition to the advertising measures taken by the publishing house, further publicity for the publication will be generated through book presentations, reviews and the distribution of promotional flyers and bookmarks at conferences and lectures.

Publication Costs (Standard Monograph)

For the publication of a Schriftenreihe volume, the author(s) or editor(s) are generally required to provide proof of financing to cover certain costs. In the case of a standard monograph, these are as follows:

The publishing house V&R unipress will, as a rule, set a retail price of between €35 and €50 – should the author(s) or editor(s) request a lower retail price, the printing costs will be increased accordingly.
