Successfully Evaluated: Research and Innovation at the Highest Level

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) was evaluated by an independent commission in October 2023. The statement released by the Leibniz Association Senate on 9 July 2024 affirms the outstanding work of the Institute and its important role in educational media research and recommends a further seven years funding.

The evaluation examined all areas of the Institute, including research, research infrastructures and transfer. The performance of the Institute’s four departments was adjudged in one case to be ‘very good to excellent’ and in the three other cases to be ‘very good’. In its statement, the Senate praised the outstanding transfer achievements into educational practice. Among these particularly the work of the three bilateral textbook commissions (German-Polish, German-Czech and German-Israeli), which are coordinated by the GEI and which provide long-standing and important platforms for international dialogue on conflictual topics in mutual histories. The Senate supports the GEI’s proposal to set up and further develop multilateral commissions within the framework of a European forum.

The statement continued, ‘it is viewed very positively that the GEI’s activities do not isolate individual teaching methodologies but rather they attempt to specify their commonalities and consider didactic concepts and methods across the board. The implementation of this approach allows the Institute to make important contributions to networking and development activities within research into didactics in social sciences subjects in Germany.’

The GEI will address the recommendations made by the evaluation commission in the coming years, which will enable it to expand and consolidate its research profile.

‘We are delighted by the extremely positive evaluation of our Institute and of the individual departments. It provides us with additional motivation to advance our research and deepens our commitment to society’ said Prof. Eckhardt Fuchs, Director of the GEI, in response to the Senate statement. He continued ‘we are also immensely proud that our application for “small-scale strategic funding”, for the purpose of creating a didactic centre for digital educational media at the Institute, has been approved by the Leibniz Senate and the Joint Science Conference (GWK). This will enable us to systematically research the opportunities and challenges associated with new digital educational media in collaboration with various specialised branches of didactics for social science subjects.

The statement can be viewed (in German) on the Leibniz Association website, as can information on the Leibniz evaluation process, which requires all Leibniz Institutes to be evaluated at least every seven years by an independent commission convened by the Leibniz Senate on behalf of the Federation and the Länder.
