CLARIN-D Working Group on History
Discipline-specific working groups (F-AG) are central constituents of the CLARIN network (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure), which is working across Europe to develop research infrastructure for language resources in the humanities and social sciences. The German branch of the project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The CLARIN Working Group on Modern History, based at the Georg Eckert Institute since 2014, merged with the Working Group on Contemporary History at the end of 2016 for the project’s third programming period. With more than 70 members, the Working Group on History is directed and coordinated jointly by the GEI and the Centre for Contemporary History (ZZF) Potsdam.
The discipline-specific working groups represent key points of intersection and interaction between CLARIN-D and research communities in specific disciplines; they act as advisory and support services for the incorporation and curation of priority research data and tools. In 2015 and 2016, the Georg Eckert Institute was involved in a curation project pertaining to its digital textbook collection.
The historians in the Working Group on History are dedicated to exploring which resources should be rendered into digital form for research purposes and which standards should be employed in this undertaking. They are also exploring the digital methods and tools that may assist historians and open up new research pathways when working with these resources.
Headed by Prof. Martin Sabrow (ZZF Potsdam), Prof. Simone Lässig (German Historical Institute Washington) and Prof. Ernesto W. De Luca (GEI), the working group also coordinates and supports interdisciplinary exchange between the historical field on the one hand and information sciences, computer linguistics and linguistics on the other.
