Radical Islam versus radical anti-Islam (RIRA)

Social polarisation and perceived threats as drivers of radicalisation and co-radicalisation among young people and post-adolescents

This project investigated empirically recognised social aspects of a spiral of radicalisation that have not yet been considered together in context and developed preventative measures for the education sector based on its findings. The central research question behind this cooperation project, involving institutions in Duisburg, Leipzig, Osnabrück and Braunschweig, asked: Which collective intervention approaches can be identified in the radicalisation and co-radicalisation of young people and post-adolescents?

  • Aims

The aim was to develop a workshop concept for educational media publishers, through which to dicuss publisher's needs in dealing with issues related to Islam and to transfer the project results. This would in turn provide suggestions for teaching units addressing Islam in subjects that take account of the current interweaving of religious and political discourses, and through (co)radicalization tendencies can be effectively counteracted.

  • Methodology

As part of this joint project the team at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) undertook a baseline study of the portrayal of Islam in German textbooks. The findings contributed to the development of pedagogical concepts and teaching materials which were developed during the project and will be available on the online platform Zwischentöne [Nuances] run by the GEI.
